About the artist

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was born in Seville, where he trained in the studio of Francisco Pacheco. His early works depicted religious and genre scenes, but his career soared when he moved to Madrid and became the official court painter to King Philip IV. Velázquez excelled in portraiture, painting not only the royal family but also members of the court, including jesters and dwarfs, with remarkable realism and empathy. His trips to Italy exposed him to Renaissance masters, influencing his technique and broadening his artistic vision. Velázquez’s innovative use of light, space, and composition solidified his reputation as a genius of Baroque art.
