About the artist
Amrita Sher-Gil was born into a multicultural family—her father was Sikh, and her mother was Hungarian. Her artistic talent emerged early, and she trained in Paris, where she was deeply influenced by European modernism, particularly the Post-Impressionist movement. Upon returning to India, Sher-Gil shifted her focus to Indian subjects, blending Western techniques with Indian themes. Her works explore the lives and emotions of rural Indian women, capturing their beauty, struggles, and dignity. Despite her short life, Sher-Gil left a profound impact on Indian art, paving the way for modern Indian painters.
