Henri Rousseau
Henri Rousseau, often referred to as Le Douanier (The Customs Officer), was a French Post-Impressionist painter celebrated for his enchanting, dreamlike jungle scenes. A self-taught artist, Rousseau’s works blend childlike simplicity with intricate detail and imagination, making him a precursor to Surrealism.

About the artist
Henri Rousseau was born into a modest family in Laval, France. Although he showed an early interest in art, he pursued a conventional career as a customs officer before dedicating himself to painting in his 40s. As a self-taught artist, Rousseau developed a unique style characterized by flat planes, vivid colors, and imaginative compositions. His jungle scenes, inspired by botanical gardens, books, and his own vivid imagination, captivated audiences with their surreal beauty. Despite being ridiculed during his lifetime for his naive style, Rousseau gained recognition posthumously as a visionary artist whose works anticipated modern movements like Surrealism.
